A collectible is any item whose value comes from scarcity, condition, and demand rather than utility. The big categories: trading cards, watches, sneakers, comics, vintage tech, toys, vinyl, and pottery. Value compounds when all three forces — scarcity, condition, demand — move together.

A sealed Pokémon set bought for £90 can sell for £200 in a year. No bank account does that. The trade-off is liquidity and knowledge — you must know what to buy and when to sell. This guide gives you both.

Don't blow it on one risky item. Split it: £20 on a charity-shop find you researched here, £20 on a sealed modern product with hype (a booster set, a collab), £10 kept as dry powder for the next opportunity. Diversify from day one.

A near-mint card is worth 5-10x a played copy. Learn the grading scale (PSA/BGS for cards, condition reports for watches). Never handle valuable items bare-handed, keep boxes and papers, and photograph everything you buy.

eBay (use saved searches and snipe tools), Vinted (underrated for vintage), Facebook Marketplace (local pickups, low competition), charity shops (the lowest prices but highest effort), and car boot sales. Each has its own strategy — start with one and master it.

One charity shop visit a week won't build a portfolio. Build a route: 6-10 shops on a rotation, hit them on restock days (often Monday/Tuesday), and befriend staff. Set up eBay saved searches with alerts. The deal flow is the business.

Grading (PSA, BGS, CGC) costs £15-30 per item but can multiply value 3-10x for the right card or comic. Rule of thumb: grade anything you suspect is a 9 or 10, sell raw anything below an 8. Do the math on fees before submitting.

Not everything should be flipped. Split your portfolio: 60% holds (items with 2-5x over 1-3 years), 30% flips (buy under, sell on within 3 months), 10% moonshots. The flips fund the holds — that's how you compound without a job.

Sold listings, not active listings, set the price. List at the top of the realistic sold range with best offer enabled. Good photos on a plain background, full condition disclosure, and fast shipping all lift your sell-through rate.

Generalists make less. Pick one category and become the person who knows it cold — vintage Seiko references, Pokémon set rotations, Moorcroft pottery patterns. Specialists spot the mispriced items generalists walk past. That's your edge.
